چکیده

Abstract We examined polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin, polychlorinated dibenzofuran (PCDD/Fs) and dioxin-like compounds formation during brine electrolysis with pitch used as the binding agent of graphite electrode. Graphite electrode was used in the past as an industrial process of chlorine production. The level of PCDFs was up to 1,800,000pg/L (28,000pg-TEQ/L) in brine electrolysis with pitch. This value corresponds approximately to 150μg/g-pitch ( 4.4μg-TEQ/g-pitch). It was obvious that specific homologue/congener patterns of PCDF from lower to higher components were apparently formed according to electrolytic conditions such as temperature, current density and also pitch form. Amounts of PCDF formation per unit concentration of pitch were 10,000-100,000ng/g-pitch. Additionally, high levels of chlorinated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (Cl-PAHs), which were dioxin-like compounds, were also detected in the above anolyte samples of brine electrolysis. Furthermore, concentrations of Cl-PAHs and the ratio of Cl-PAHs to dioxins varied according to the electrolysis process performed. These results can support the assumption that brine electrolysis by graphite electrode abundantly contained pitch in the past might have been a significantly potential source of Cl-PAHs as well as PCDFs contamination.

Dioxins contamination in the feed additive (feed grade cupric sulfate) tied to chlorine industry

The sources of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) found in animal feed additive (feed grade cupric sulfate, CuSO4) were investigated and traced back to the formation of chlorinated organic compounds in the chlor-alkali industry. PCDD/Fs could be transported through the supply chain: hydrochloric acid (HCl) by-produced during formation of chlorinated organic compounds in c...

Identification the Content of the Windbox Dust Related to the Formation of PCDD/Fs during the Iron Ore Sintering Process

This study measured the contents of the ionic and elemental constituents, and the chemical compounds containing in windbox (WB) dusts collected from a commercial iron ore sintering plant, then the results were used to identify possible PCDD/Fs formation pathways in the WB. We found that the abundance in both KCl and NaCl may provide a suitable condition for de novo synthesis of PCDD/Fs in the W...

A preliminary investigation on emission of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/dibenzofurans and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls from coke plants in China.

Thermal related processes are widely recognized as the main sources of formation and emission of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). It is well known that, carbonization of coal in coke production involves many thermal reactions at high-temperature. However, there are still no strong evidences to identify coking processes as source of ...

Polychlorinated naphthalenes and other dioxin-like compounds in Elbe River sediments.

Contamination of Elbe River (Germany) sediments with dioxin-like toxicants was investigated following the 500-year flood (flood that statistically occurs once in 500 years) of 2002. It was hypothesized that large amounts of particulate matter from river beds and associated dioxin-like toxicants were mobilized and transported during this flood event. The investigation focused on polychlorinated ...

Estimation and characterization of PCDD/Fs and dioxin-like PCB emission from secondary zinc and lead metallurgies in China.

Secondary zinc and lead production is addressed as one of the potential sources of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (dioxin-like PCBs) due to the impurity of the raw material. However, the release inventory of PCDD/Fs and dioxin-like PCBs is very scarce for these secondary nonferrous metallurgies. This study selected typical...
